The Things of Earth by Joe Rigney

This book is about finding balance with the gifts God gives us without being consumed by them & making them our idols.

The things of this earth are temporary & we should concern ourselves with things that are eternal. We can't take materials with us when we die, so we shouldn't allow ourselves to be distracted by them. On the other hand, we shouldn't feel guilty about enjoying the gifts we are given.

The beginning of this book was quite difficult to understand. There is a lot of high theology & the author even asked his readers to bear with him. But as I continued to read, it began to make sense & I found myself thinking about how greedy I can sometimes be. Very often I tend to idolize things & put the things of God on the backburner. This book helped to put me in check.

At the heart of "The Things of Earth", is the fact that God is a loving father Who is more important than anything this world has to offer. And because He is so kind & loving, He gives us gifts to enjoy, whether they be jobs, food, hobbies, friends, or family. We just have to remember to not make these things our gods.
